So, you have signed up for a dating site, filed out your profile, and now what the heck comes next? There are a few things that you should be aware of in the world of online dating. You have to remember that there is no inflection in typing. This means there is little room for sarcasm. It can easily be misconstrued. Flirting can prove to be just as difficult, unless you are aware of how to add emotion symbols.
A lot of messengers have emoticons, which are emotion icons. There are smiley faces, winks, kisses, frowns, you name it you can find the expression. For the sites that don?t have these available there is a way to utilize symbols on your keyboard to create them. For an example: : -) is a smile; : -( is a frown; ;-) is a wink; >:- ( is angry. :-* is a kiss. These are probably the most used, so learn them. There are a lot more, but some you will learn as you see them, and feel free to create your own. There are also acronyms for sentences that are used often, such as: LOL is Laughing Out Loud; LMAO is Laughing My A** Off; CUL8R is See You Later; NRN is No Response Needed. You will pick up on the most used very quickly. There are many sites available that lists hundreds of different combinations. If you feel intimidated, print it out for a quick reference. No one will know you have a cheat sheet.
Do not feel intimidated. You have to realize you are in your house, on your computer, and you get to call the shots. There is no reason to feel out of place or concerned. As long as you do not include any personal information, you are only a screen name. It is very important also when choosing a screen name to not include anything personal, but make it memorable. Use words instead of acronyms. This way you stick out in someones mind. The dating scene online ranges from young to older, straight to gay, and every color and religion you can think of. Wherever your comfort zone is, is where you need to stay. If you branch out too quickly you can get discouraged easily. Especially for the technically challenged. Computers can be tough to navigate at first, but once you familiarize yourself, and learn the basics, you can set out to explore.
There is an old saying, If at first you don?t succeed, try, try again. Keep this in mind as you are searching. Do not let one negative experience put a bad taste in your mouth. If you were attempting to date via a conventional method, you wouldn?t give up talking to people and being in public, right? This is really just an extension socialism at its best. After all, you can have all the drinks you want, you won't get a DUI, and you don?t have to worry about who or what you wake up next to. Worst-case scenario, you have to do some damage control on your buddy list.
